Red meat increases risk of death
Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter
June 2009 Newsletter

People who eat the most red meat and the most processed meat (deli meat, sausages, hot dogs) are more likely to die younger. Overall men had an 11% increased risk of death and women had a 16% risk of death, which is categorized as a "modest" increase in risk. Even when other factors were accounted for, such as fruit and vegetable consumpion, smoking, exercise, obesity -- the highest meat eaters had the greatest risk. The results of this study don't mean you have to become a vegetarian because there are health benefits associated with eating meat. However, Tufts recommends a reduction in total meat intake and an even greater reduction in processed meats.
