Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter June 2009 Newsletter |
People who eat the most red meat and the most processed meat (deli meat, sausages, hot dogs) are more likely to die younger. Overall men had an 11% increased risk of death and women had a 16% risk of death, which is categorized as a "modest" increase in risk. Even when other factors were accounted for, such as fruit and vegetable consumpion, smoking, exercise, obesity -- the highest meat eaters had the greatest risk. The results of this study don't mean you have to become a vegetarian because there are health benefits associated with eating meat. However, Tufts recommends a reduction in total meat intake and an even greater reduction in processed meats. |
